1. What is an elective or placement, and how does it work in the Philippines? An elective or placement is a short-term, immersive learning opportunity designed to give students practical experience in their chosen field. In the Philippines, we collaborate with hospitals, clinics, and institutions to offer supervised, hands-on training in real-world settings.

2. Who is eligible to join Electives Asia’s programs abroad? Our programs are open to students and professionals currently enrolled in or pursuing degrees in medicine, nursing, dentistry, midwifery, radiologic technology, and medical technology.

3. How do I apply for an elective placement? To apply, complete our online contact form with the following details: full name, email address, phone number, school name, chosen program, course, year level, preferred duration, group size (if applicable), desired start date, and any questions you may have. You can also request a call for further discussion.

4. Is there an application fee? There is no application fee; however, a $250 non-refundable registration fee is required to process your request and confirm your placement. This fee must be paid within 30 days of completing the online registration form. Our team will send you the registration form link once you have confirmed your decision to proceed with your elective.

5. When should I apply for an elective? We recommend applying at least 3 to 6 months in advance to secure your preferred dates and placement.

6. How long can I stay for an elective placement? The duration of an elective varies, but most students stay for 2 to 4 weeks. Some programs may allow for a longer stay depending on availability.

7. What documents do I need to provide? Below is the list of required documents: •Student profile with clinical experience details, signed by your school or with an official seal •Certificate of Student Status, diploma, or school transcript with an official school seal •Reference or endorsement letter signed by your school or with an official seal •Passport (valid for at least six months) •COVID-19 vaccination card •Recent headshot photo (taken within the last six months) •Waiver signed by you, your school, and a parent/guardian (template available upon request) •Health insurance •Travel insurance •Visa (optional, depending on your nationality and length of stay)

8. Can I travel with my family or partner? Yes, you can travel with your family or partner. However, non-elective participants are not eligible for accommodation under our program. That said, we are happy to provide guidance and recommendations to help your spouse or family members adjust and settle into the new environment during your stay.

9. Do I get paid? No, our electives abroad programs are designed purely for educational and experiential learning purposes. They provide participants with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a healthcare setting that differs from their home country, particularly in a developing nation.

10. Can I do my elective with a group of friends? Yes, we can accommodate group placements, subject to availability. Please contact us to confirm the available spots.

11. Where will my placement be located? Currently, we offer elective placements in Capiz, known as the Seafood Capital of the Philippines. We are actively working on expanding to additional locations across the Philippines to provide students with the same high-quality learning experiences as our past participants.

12. Is the Philippines safe for international students? Yes, the Philippines is generally safe for international students. However, we advise taking standard precautions, such as avoiding unsafe areas, staying aware of your belongings, and following local guidelines. To ensure your safety, we provide a detailed briefing upon your arrival.

13. What are the living costs in the Philippines? The cost of living is generally affordable. Budget around $300–$700 per month for food, transportation, and personal expenses, depending on your lifestyle.

14. What is the local culture like in the Philippines? The Philippines is known for its warm hospitality, friendly people, and diverse culture. English is widely spoken, and students often find it easy to adapt. Respect for elders, modest dressing in professional settings, and an open attitude toward cultural differences are important.

15. Are vaccinations required before traveling? Yes, we recommend vaccinations for Covid, hepatitis A & B, typhoid, dengue, rabies, tetanus and malaria prophylaxis.

16. Will I need a visa to travel to the Philippines? Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the duration of your stay. Many countries, including the U.S., UK, EU nations, Australia, and Canada, allow travelers to enter the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days. If your elective exceeds this period, you may need to apply for a visa extension at the Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines. We recommend checking with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in your country for the most up-to-date visa requirements before your trip.

17. Where and when should I book my flights? We highly recommend booking your flights as early as possible to secure the best rates and availability. Additionally, consider planning a weekend or post-elective getaway to explore the beautiful tourist destinations in the Philippines. For your convenience, we can suggest must-visit places, but you are free to make your own travel arrangements based on your preference

18. Which airport should I fly into when traveling to Roxas City, Capiz? You should book your flight to Roxas City Airport (RXS), which is the nearest airport to your elective placement. If no direct flights are available, you can fly into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) in Manila or Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in Cebu, then take a connecting flight to Roxas City. Once you confirm your elective with us, we will provide further details and assistance with your travel arrangements.

19. What should I bring with me? Bring comfortable medical attire (scrubs, white coat), a stethoscope (if applicable), personal medication, and travel essentials. A packing list will be provided before your departure.

20. Are there scholarships or financial aid options available? Some universities offer funding for international electives. We recommend checking with your school or external funding organizations.

21. How much does the elective placement cost? The cost of an elective placement varies based on the duration, selected services, and package that best fits your budget. You also have the option to exclude food and accommodation. Detailed pricing for each program can be found on our website under the respective program listings.

22. What is included? 23. What type of accommodation do you have? We offer a variety of accommodation options near your placement site, including private houses, beachfront bed and breakfasts, and private apartments, all in safe and secure locations.

24. What is the food like? Do you offer vegetarian/vegan options or cater to dietary requirements? We serve breakfast and dinner in a casual, family-style setting, offering a mix of Filipino and international cuisine. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, though choices may be more limited in rural areas. If you have specific dietary requirements, please inform us in advance so we can accommodate your needs.

25. What support do you provide upon arrival? We offer airport pickup, orientation sessions, and ongoing assistance throughout your stay.

26. Does the accommodation have internet access, air conditioning, and a private toilet and bath? Yes, the accommodation provides internet access, and you will receive the WiFi password upon arrival so you can quickly connect with your family. Each bedroom is equipped with air conditioning for your comfort, and all accommodations include a private toilet and bath with a hot and cold shower, ensuring a comfortable stay.

27. What language is used in hospitals and clinics? English is the primary language in medical settings, making it easy for international students to communicate. However, learning a few basic Filipino phrases can be helpful.

28. Should I learn the local language? Even though English is a second language where you are going, it would be good if you knew some words and phrases that are unique to the area. In addition to that, we will hand you some cheat sheets of the local language that are relevant to the program that you choose to participate in.

29. Who can I contact in case of emergencies? We provide on-ground support and emergency contacts, including your placement coordinator and local staff, who are available 24/7.

30. What if I have special medical needs or disabilities? Please inform us in advance so we can accommodate your needs and ensure appropriate support.

31. What happens if I need to cancel my elective? Our cancellation policy varies based on the notice period, and refunds may be available depending on the circumstances. Please feel free to contact us to discuss the details of our cancellation policy.

32. What kind of clinical experience can I expect? Your experience will depend on your area of study and chosen institution. You may have the opportunity to observe procedures, assist in patient care, join ward rounds, and participate in community health programs.

33. What are the days and hours of the internships? Typical shifts take place only Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 2 pm in a hospital setting, and between 8 am and 12 pm in a rural setting. On the other hand, if you work in a hospital, the length of your shifts can be longer than usual depending on the department to which you are allocated. Every weekend shift is completely voluntary.

34. Can I choose my specialty or department? Yes, we try to accommodate student preferences based on availability. Specialties may include general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and more.

35. Can I combine the hospital and rural elective programs? Yes. It is always an option for you to mix hospital-based electives with rural-based electives in order to gain experience in a variety of healthcare environments at no additional expense. You need only let us know, and we will see to it that everything is in order for you.

36. Can I go on evening and weekend shifts? Yes. Only if you are at a medical facility; this does not apply in other contexts, especially rural ones. We also urge that you contact the department you be allocated after you have settled in so that you can plan a weekend or night shift schedule during your elective with the medical professional you work with. This will allow you to get the most out of your experience during your elective.

37. Can I extend my placement if I want to stay longer? Extensions may be possible, depending on availability. Let us know as early as possible so we can make arrangements.

38. Will I be supervised during my placement? Yes, all students are supervised by qualified professionals who ensure that your learning experience is safe and beneficial.

39. Will I have access to learning resources during my placement? Yes, most hospitals and clinics provide access to medical libraries, case studies, and discussions with mentors.

40. Can my elective count toward my university credits? It depends on your university’s policies. We can provide documentation and evaluations if required for credit transfer.

41. Can I travel during my elective? Yes! Many students take weekend trips to explore the Philippines’ beautiful beaches, mountains, and cultural sites. We can provide travel advice for safe and enjoyable trips.

42. How much money do I need for weekend travel and tourist activities? The amount you need depends on your destination, activities, and personal preferences. On average, budget travelers spend around $50–$100 per weekend, covering local transport, food, and sightseeing. If you plan to visit popular tourist spots, go island hopping, or stay in resorts, costs can range from $150–$300 or more per weekend. We recommend planning ahead and setting a budget based on the experiences you want to enjoy. Our team can also provide recommendations for affordable and exciting trips!

43. What is the mode of transportation for weekend getaways and tourist activities? Transportation options vary depending on your destination and budget. Common modes of transport include: Public Buses & Vans – Affordable and available for intercity and provincial travel, Taxis & Ride-Sharing (Grab) – Convenient for short-distance trips in cities, Tricycles & Jeepneys – Local and budget-friendly transport within towns, Ferries & Boats – Ideal for island-hopping and coastal destinations, Private Car Rentals & Tour Vans – Great for group travel and more flexible itineraries. We can assist in arranging transportation based on your travel plans to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip!

44. Are ATMs and card payments available in tourist destinations? Major cities and tourist spots have ATMs and accept card payments, but some rural areas may only take cash. It’s best to carry enough cash for small expenses.
